Dispatch: Coordination and cooperation in Kenya

By Matthew Hamilton - Posted on 17 December 2012

For the past week, I’ve been helping to facilitate a workshop on the use of remote sensing for climate change adaptation in East Africa. The workshop is actually part of a NASA and USAID research fellowship program for university students from all over eastern and southern Africa, who are carrying out projects on climate change dimensions of food security, flood control and biodiversity conservation. We’ve been based at the headquarters of the Regional Center for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD). Also based here is a program called SERVIR-Africa and together, the organization and the program have been leading a number of efforts to increase adaptive capacity in East Africa.

New Research Brief: Rancher Attitudes and Participation in Conservation Easements in California

By Matthew Hamilton - Posted on 16 March 2012

CEPB researchers and colleagues have released a new research brief--"Rancher Attitudes and Participation in Conservation Easements in California"--as part of ongoing work on a USDA-funded project on grazing management and ecosystem services.

Data were collected from a survey of 475 ranchers in California. The research brief casts doubt on the stereotype that a strong property rights orientation is a barrier to conservation easements. Although ranchers expressed a strong commitment to private property rights, these attitudes had no significant relationship to the likelihood of currently holding a conservation easement, or planning to in the future. In contrast, positive views about government’s role in conservation significantly increase rates of current and future planned participation.

Web-based guide to participatory orthophoto mapping...now live!

If you have a minute, please check out www.mapeoamano.org, and give me feedback; or better yet, leave a few comments on the site itself. The website is an effort to document and improve a mapping tool called A-MANO. In A-MANO, stakeholders transform a satellite image into a dynamic map of the focus area of a community-based development project. In sequential mapping sessions, local people and technical specialists collaborate to put their respective knowledge on the map. In doing, the map becomes much more than a visual representation of the community. When practitioners add to the map the technical data they have gathered, local people gain access to a valuable body of knowledge. And when local people contribute their knowledge to the map, development practitioners gain access to a comprehensive and multi-layered body of data that they can use to better target their efforts.

Dispatch: GIS and social networks in tree-level monitoring of carbon sequestration

I had a chance to meet with staff of The International Small Group and Tree Planting Program (TIST) last week. The group was kicking off a new program in Honduras, modeled after their successful activities in Tanzania, India, Uganda and Kenya. In a nutshell, TIST works to increase environmental quality in subsistence farming communities by establishing payment schemes (through Greenhouse Gas Sales) to land owners who plant and maintain tree groves.

Dispatch: Jacob and Matt in Central America

By Matthew Hamilton - Posted on 04 August 2010

For most of the summer we have been in Central America, working to help improve efforts to manage water resources in impoverished rural communities. We’re here under the auspices of the Global Water Initiative (read all about it here: www.globalwaterinitiative.com), which is a coalition of international NGOs working in three world regions to address the declining state of the world’s freshwater supply. In Central America—including Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, and Nicaragua—the lead coalition partner is Catholic Relief Services (CRS), and we have been working most closely with CRS staff. Even though we are both involved in the same project, we are approaching our research quite differently.
