4-6 pm
Wednesday, April 6
UC Sacramento Center 1130 K Street, Suite LL 22 Sacramento, CA
Light refreshments will be served at the panel and a no-host happy hour will follow at Pyramid Alehouse, Brewery & Restaurant, 1029 K Street Sacramento, CA 95814

Despite dramatic decline in the average blood lead levels of children, lead toxicity continues to be a threat. Lead persists in the environment and is present in older homes and the surrounding soils. In addition, the burden of elevated blood lead levels is not equally distributed; some communities have lead poisoning rates of 15-20% while the national average is below 2%. Finally, blood lead levels below 10 micrograms per deciliter, the current CDC level of concern, have been associated with substantial decrements in children's learning abilities and elevated risks for behavioral problems, such as ADHD and conduct disorder.

Pan

elists will discuss science and controversies, policy and community action to prevent lead poisoning.
The panel is free to all and will include opportunities for audience participation.
About the panel:
Ms. Linda Kite is the Executive Director of the Healthy Homes Collaborative in Los Angeles. She has extensive experience in community organizing and citizen science related to soil lead levels, lead poisoning prevention, and soil remediation.
Dr. Bruce P. Lanphear, Senior Scientist at the Child & Family Research Institute and Professor of Health Sciences at Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC has conducted numerous studies to examine the effects of lead toxicity on children and to prevent childhood lead poisoning. He is the principal investigator of a birth cohort study to examine the effects of environmental toxins, including lead, tobacco, pesticides and plastics, on the risk of behavioral problems in children.
Dr. Howard Mielke is Research Professor at Tulane University in Chemistry and the Center for Bioenvironmental Research. His is a leading expert on environmental justice. His soil lead and children’s exposure research influenced policies and laws in many places. He is on the U.S. EPA Scientific Advisory Board Panel on Lead Dust.
The panel is sponsored by the Institute of Governmental Affairs, Environmental Justice Project, John Muir Institute of the Environment, Center for Regional Change, Center for Environmental Policy and Behavior, and the Cadenasso Landscape and Urban Ecology Lab
