EPAP/ESM Mentorship Program (ESP 198)

Build your network, find your path, and thrive at UC Davis and beyond.
Open to EPAP and ESM undergraduates, this 1-unit course runs Fall, Winter, and Spring. Students are encouraged to enroll for all three quarters to get the full mentorship experience.

What you’ll gain

  • Personalized mentorship: Get matched with a mentor aligned with your interests/background and meet monthly.
  • Faculty connection: Opportunities to attend weekly office hours with Dr. Gwen Arnold to discuss your plans and secure a faculty reference.
  • Career insight roundtables: Join two evening Zoom roundtables per quarter where multiple mentors share paths and lessons and answer questions.
  • Actionable deliverables: Each quarter includes a short, focused assignment to move your goals forward.

Course rhythm & assignments

  • Roundtable reflection: A 1–2 page write-up due within one week of the event you attend.
  • End-of-quarter deliverables due before the end of Finals Week each term

Expectations

Students

  • Complete a short pre-program survey
  • Meet your mentor monthly.
  • Attend at least one roundtable per quarter and submit the reflection.
  • Complete the end-of-quarter deliverable.
  • Visit Dr. Arnold’s office hours at least once.
  • Complete a short year-end survey.
    Optional: Program kickoff, writing workshops, and snack-break meetups.

Mentors

  • Complete a short pre-program survey
  • Provide a brief bio (and optional photo).
  • Join a short mentor training and complete implicit bias training.
  • Meet mentees monthly; participate in a roundtable if asked.
  • Complete a brief year-end survey.

Logistics & grading

All prompts, submissions, and announcements are on Canvas. You can message via Canvas or email; expect replies within 2 business days.


Grading: P/NP. An NP may be issued if a student misses more than one assignment or misses and fails to reschedule more than two mentor meetings in a quarter.
